Lighthouse; Jerald and Sandra tANNER, dESPISED AND bELOVED cRITICS OF mORMONISM

-Ronald V. Huggins-

Probably our favorite book of the year. The Tanners were some of the first and most important researchers on Mormonism and their story is absolutely amazing. Sandra was a very good friend of my mother, Evelyn, and has been a wonderful friend to the work of the Kingdom in Utah. Three fascinating facts about the Tanners:

1) Their offices were bugged by the same people who bugged the Watergate Hotel.

2) You are able to browse the Internet today because of lawsuit the Tanners won against the Mormon church.

3) You are able to download information off the Internet because of another lawsuit they filed. This is an excellent biography. Certainly the number one pick of the year.

The Rifle

-Andrew Biggio-

An excellent account of a young man’s journey to learn the story of his uncle who was killed at Anzio during World War 2. . .as told through the rifle his uncle would have used. It is a great read.

The Bomber Mafia: A dream, A Temptation and the Longest Night of the war

-Malcolm Gladwell-

like all his books, a very interesting telling of a famous bombing run of World War 2. If you like Gladwell, you will like this book.

The Descent of the Dove; A Short History of the Holy Spirt

-Charles Williams-

A very good work on the Holy Spirit and the Church. Williams was a member of “The Inklings,” the group of writers and thinkers which included C. S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and T. S. Elliot, and a very accomplished writer of plays, fiction, non-fiction and theology.

Heaven: Biblical Answers to Common Questions about our eternal Home

-Randy Alcorn-

A much shorter version of his extensive work on Biblical teachings on Heaven.

The Inner Life Of Animals

-Peter Wohlleben-

I read his amazing book on Trees which was excellent and will inform every walk I ever take in the woods from now on. Hoping this book would be as good as his work on trees, I was extremely disappointed in the poor quality of this book. This would be my least recommended for the year.

The Walk: The life changing journey of two friends

-Michael Card-

a wonderful accounting of his experience with an older man who was a mentor to him. Card is famous for his music, but this is a good little read as well.

The Breeding of American Slaves: True Stories of American Slave Breeding and slave babies

-Stephen Ashley-

A tragically fascinating book on one of the very worst aspects of one of the darkest topics in American history.

A Burning in my bones

-Winn Collier-

the authorized biography of Eugene Peterson widely respected as “The Pastor’s Pastor” and the editor of The Message Bible. It was a quite wonderful read.

The Life of Josiah Henson: Formerly a slave

-Josiah Henson-

an account of the man who is considered “the real Uncle Tom.” A very short, but quite interesting read. Thank you to Samuel and Judy Bryant for this recommendation.
